Georgian College, Huronia Transition Homes, Police, Social Services and Community Organizations Partnering to Support Survivors of Sexual Violence

April 8, 2015 – The first in a series of United Front inter-professional workshops, the United Front Against Sexual Violence, is being held on May 20th at the Orillia campus of Georgian College. This full day event will focus on the importance of collaboration in human services and community safety sectors in order to effectively help support individuals who come in contact with the justice system.

“The goals of the Unified Front Series of workshops is to engage, strengthen and foster greater collaboration between the human services and community safety sectors,” says Jill Dunlop, CSL Liaison with The Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at Georgian College in Orillia. “This is an inter-professional student workshop being held not just to support survivors but emphasize that sexual violence crosses all disciplines, and we have a responsibility to end it- thus the united front” she added.

“Sexual Violence is something that we all have a responsibility to eliminate from our schools, community and society at large. May is sexual assault awareness month, and in accordance with the mandate of Huronia Transition Homes, this event will educate students around the complexities of violence, and hold participants responsible for advocacy and action on ending sexual violence against women,” says Haily MacDonald, Community Development Coordinator, with Huronia Transition Homes

Students from the human services and community safety programs at Georgian College will work with police, social service and community organizations to participate in the day-long event which will include interactive workshops, panel discussions, and a networking event.

“This is an incredible opportunity for students, community members, and faculty to network and collaborate with professionals from the Police Services, Social Services and various community organizations supporting survivors of sexual violence. Georgian College models sectorial collaboration and ensures that students are aware of a continuum of services to support those coming into contact with the justice system”, says Suzie Addison-Toor, Manager of the Centre for Social Entrepreneurship.

This event is a collaborative effort between Georgian College, Huronia Transition Homes and the J.W. McConnell Family Foundation.
