For Immediate Release:

La Maison Rosewood Shelter’s December 6Vigil

November 26, 2014- On Saturday December 6, 2014, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women, La Maison Rosewood Shelter will host its annual December 6 vigil, from 2pm till 4pm, at the Midland Town Hall.

The vigil remembers the fourteen women murdered at l’École Polytechnique, and the twenty-eight women (to date) murdered this year in Ontario, as a result of gender-based violence. Community members are asked to reflect upon ongoing violence against women, and disorient the normalization of such violence. This is followed by a call to action, demanding that community members take accountability in actively ending violence against women.

Despite the fact it was twenty-five years ago that fourteen women were murdered, just because they were women in the Montreal Massacre; Violence against women continues to characterize our society, limiting women’s mobility and restricting their autonomy.

Executive Director of Huronia Transition Homes, Kathy Willis, reminds us that “Collectively we have the power to be the change we want in the world, and collectively we can end misogyny and sexism, ultimately leading us to a world free of violence”.

In remembering the women murdered as a result of gender-based violence, we must be deliberate in recognizing the disproportionate number of missing and murdered aboriginal women. We act in solidarity with the Native Women’s Association of Canada in calling for a national public inquiry, and working towards a national framework of action.
